How to Create a Facebook Welcome Page and Make it a Landing Page

90% of your visitors to your Facebook Page will never return to your page to get your updates. Instead they will watch your updates through their home page feed.  Make sure and capture their interest and contact details during their very first visit to your page.  This is why you must know how to create a facebook page for a business with a welcome page.

How?

  1. Create a Facebook Welcome Page with an opt-in form where you can give your visitor a cool free bonus in exchange for their email.
  2. Set that Welcome Page as a landing page so all your first time visitors are directed to this page before they hit the “like” button on your page.

In this quick tutorial I am going to show you how to create a welcome page in your Facebook Business Page and then set it as a Landing Page.  In layman’s terms…learn to create a really cool page that first time visitors to your Facebook Page are automatically directed to.  This page can display a welcome video, an opt-in or sign up form to collect your visitor’s emails and some great images.

  • Anonymous

Hi. Which HTML do you mean? Please explain a bit more and I should be able to help.

  • Casey

Do you know how to change the icon so its not that ugly star?

Yes, that is a default setting.  You need a disqus account and then you
can choose your own photo.  You can get one here –

how do i upload an ebook pdf file into my welcome page in facebook?

  • http://twitter.com/SaxbysPhila 20th & Walnut Coffee

Thank you, you explained this entire process so much easier (and clearer) than any other article I was able to find!!

  • Moh Nasrallah

thank you :) this is very useful

  • Ay

how to create these HTML codes??

  • Anonymous

Hi Gagnon.  You need to host the pdf file, then link to that file on your welcome page.  If you are building your page in wordpress this is really easy because you can insert the file into the page you are building and therefore the html code you use for your Facebook page.  I hope that helped.

  • Anonymous

Hi Ali.  Do you mean “add a new page” in wordpress?  I am not sure exactly what you mean

  • Anonymous

Then are you in Facebook?  Are you referring to how to add the application?  Or how to past the html code into a page?  I am not sure what you mean by bars.  Happy to help – just need more info

  • Sara

after adding the ‘add new page’ i didnt get the editor…i mean the editor didnot appear..what should i do???

  • Anonymous

Hi Sara.  It sounds like you are not editing the page as the page?  In the upper right of your Facebook click the dropdown arrow, then “use facebook page as” then find the page you are adding the welcome page too.  Then go back to you page and you will see edit options.

  • Anonymous

You first need to design the page using wordpress or another html page creator.  That is where you get the code to paste into the boxes.  Make sense?

Sign up for a free account at wordpress.com, choose a username and password, then login to create your first post.  This is where you get the html code from to put in the Facebook app.

Great info, Heather!   I’m wondering…I have a Join My List page on my FB fan page which fans can put their email address in and it goes right into my Constant Contact account.  It is editable as far as text and jpg header are concerned.  If I set this to be my landing page, will only NEW potential fans land on it?  Or will the “already fans” land there too?  Also, when new fans enter their email address, should you also tell them to LIKE your page? We’re going to give away an iPad and want to use FB as the contest platform.  We want to collect new email addresses and everyone that enters their email address AND likes our page (as well as all existing fans) will be entered to win.

  • Anonymous

Great question.  If you set it to be your landing page then this is what first time visitors will see.  Returning visitors who have liked your page will not be sent there. They will be sent to your wall instead.

Even though you set this page as a landing page it will still exist as a tab under your profile image that your current followers can click on too.

So you can say “like my page” on that page for new fans but it will also be seen by current fans.

Another option is to do something like this (which is more advanced):
    1) Create a landing page that is only for first time subscribers that says they have to like your page to find out how to win an ipad.
    2) Create a separate page that is all about the contest that you can refer your active followers to in your wall posts.  This would have a different Constant Contact form.

A few examples: Here is a good profile image pointing down to a separate contest page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Frank-Kern/137568852956377 (his contest is now closed though).  And here is a client of ours that has multiple pages that have worked well for different campaigns - http://www.facebook.com/BecomeALifeCoach.

Please feel free to ask more questions if you want to go advanced :)

Was disappointed a bit, seemed cool in the beginning but then not knowing what WordPress is could barely understand how to make what you were making on the video,

  • Iva

Great tutorial! I got everything done, but for some reason, I can’t see the finished page. I click on one and it shows it to me, but when I try to go back to see the other one, it takes me back to the “edit” mode with the two empty boxes. Is there a way to see the finished pages?

  • Anonymous

At the top of the boxes where you enter your html code you should see a button that says “save and view tab”.  When you click on that you are given the option to view the tab as a fan or non fan.  Click on non fan.  Then you should see the page.  Does that help?

  • Smileykat02

I can’t find how to embed the video I have looked not on the actual youtube channel but it isn’t there please help :( good video though really helpful

  • VmobileBET

very helpful! thank you soo much!

  • Ej

Anyone know of a way for returning visitors, who have liked the page, to default to a tab opposed to the wall

  • Anonymous

Hi.  You need to get the embed code from the YouTube video you want to use by clicking on “share” under the video.  You have to do this from YouTube. Then paste the code on the spot you want it to appear on the page you are creating in wordpress (or whatever program you are using).  Then when you paste the full page code into the app it will include the video code.  Make sense?

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately no. My team and I have not been able to figure this out.  Only first-time visitors.

    Dear Heather

Thank you for your welcome page tutorial!!  I had been spending so much time searching for the right App to get it on.  I had struggled to understand how to use Static HTML from our tutorial, but yours got me fully understood instantly.  I did exactly you said from Word Press to get started. I got image and video in…. impressed!

Heather, thank you you saved my days and my time!
Keep up your good work, love it! :)

I agree with everyone here and Thank You for the help Heather.  Although the video is 1 year old it is still relevant and made my life so much easier.  I had also been searching for 6 months on how to do it.  The last part about making it the landing tab is not showing up in my account. It may be a glitch in facebook this week.
    Thank you again!
    Wish you well

  • JJ

I had read and watched a few tutorials on this very subject matter and I must say this is by far the clearest and most straight-forward I have seen to date, you made it look doable. Your teaching skill is superb (amidst the distracting cars rolling by) but there’s the generosity to share that information as well. So thank you very much for this, you have surely enlightened a lot of non-tech savvy small businesses like myself and feel a bit braver to venture out there in the ever-increasing daunting world of business technology and social media. I can hardly wait to give it a try!

  • Bart

Loved it! Just one question though, on your banner picture that you posted above your video, when I tried doing it, it said I need to use an absolute URL, but I’m not sure where to put it or how to write it. Instead of WordPress, I use DreamWeaver, so I don’t know if the layout’s different or not. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

facebook already removed the button for landing page,or do you have any idea how we can make a landing page without the button?

  • heatherporter

That they did :( .  You can’t make a landing page in Facebook anymore with the new timeline format.  But you can highlight your page in a couple of ways – with an image, name and placement. Just go in to edit your page, then go to apps, then find this app.  You can edit it from within there and I recommend naming the app something like “FREE gift” or whatever you are giving away.  You will also see a new area in the app where you can upload a photo that will take the place of the grey default star that used to appear.  So perhaps you can use an image that also highlights what your outcome is for the page. Lastly you can move around the apps that appear under your cover image by clicking on the little drop down arrow.  Hope that helps!

  • heatherporter

Hi Bart.  I somehow missed your post.  Let me know if you still need help.
